Volleyball and Lacrosse

My focus athletically first semester was to make the basketball team, and I achieved this goal. This second semester, my new year's resolution was to try more new things. Apart from joining a fraternity, this mainly includes my decision to play not only club volleyball for Trinity, but also club lacrosse.

Volleyball has been great for me because it improves my basketball ability. To me, volleyball isn't an endurance sport, but rather an explosion sport. By that I mean it doesn't require the athletes to exercise at a consistent rate and tire out. It instead gives the advantage to athletes with greater abilities who can perform better in short periods of time. I also have loved playing volleyball during games and practices. It is a high energy sport that is extremely fun once you start to get the hang of it. I look forward to continueing playing for the team, and improving for my next few years at Trinity.

I also recently joined the lacrosse club team. I've only been to one practice so far but I am very familiar with the sport already. It requires everything from an athlete; focus, endurance, coordination, teamwork, physicality, and skill. Lacrosse is by far the most physical sport I've played, and it is the only sport I've had to wear full pads for (not counting a helmet in baseball or shingaurds in soccer). From my one practice, I can tell that the sport demands much more skill than I originally thought. Throwing and cathing the fast moving ball isn't a problem when just standing around, but when you too are running full speed, catching and throwing are much more difficult. Like everyother sport I've played, I too love lacrosse and look forward to improving in the near future.

So far my new years resolution has worked great for me, and I have continued to stay in excellent shape while juggling my activities; basketball, fraternity life, schoolwork, and now volleyball and lacrosse.

19 Years of being Matt Selling

Most people know me mainly as a jock. I've had a sports ball in my hands before I could even walk; and ever since then, sports have been the single thing in life that I enjoy the most. Growing up, my three main sports (in order of importance) were; 1) soccer, 2) baseball, and 3) basketball. Other than simply these three, I also tried everything else in between like skateboarding, golf, tennis, lacrosse, football, and many more.

Sports offer more than just pure enjoyment to me though. Sports also build valuable qualities in people such as determination, competitiveness, trust, friendships, and responsibility. Of course, another benefit of being involved in sports is the exercise involved, which helps an individual maintain physically fit, and healthy. I've been active and been exercising my entire life from sports. This blog is about me continuing this trend here at Trinity.

I just turned nineteen on January 22nd, and being 18 sure had been my most interesting year. I enjoyed my senior year at my school that I spent 14 years at; had my first serious girlfriend; played varsity soccer, basketball, and baseball with all my close friends; graduated from high school; went out of the country for the first time; attended and loved my first semester at Trinity University. Throughout this year I've devoted my free time and hard work into achieving my goal, of "walking-on" to the Trinity basketball team. I succeeded mainly from all my hard work on the basketball court and in the weight room. I played basketball seven days a week (often twice a day) and incorporated a weightlifting program as well. Not being the most talented or tallest basketball player, I truly believe the main reason I made the team was that the coach realized I was in-shape, and had already developed a hard work-ethic through my training.

Today, I continue to enjoy training and exercising. My workout routine at Trinity currently involves weight lifting 3+ days a week and basketball (team practices or individual training) everyday. I also get a little exercise from being an active member on the club men's volleyball team, running on the track, and playing every intramural available. By reading this blog, you can follow my training stories, experiences, memories, tips, and everything in between that happens to me here at Trinity.
